Member Activities & Field Trips

FCGC members often draw inspiration for their own gardens from touring other gardens, large and small.  Past tours have included:
  • A day in the country, in the vicinity of Little Washington, Virginia, with FCGC member Sylvie Rowand.  Sylvie is a most talented gourmet cook and author of a blog with kitchen gardening advice, ideas and pictures for those interested in food gardening and cooking in the mid-Atlantic area. For the past several years, Sylvie has been hosting FCGC members in her lovely home.  The visits generally include lunch, a garden tour, and an additional visit to another garden or local nursery.
  • A visit to a FCGC member's spectacular dahlia collection.  This is a flower that comes in all sizes, shapes and colors.  It was the perfect day to spend among these beauties and learn how to plant and care for them.

  • A tour of the Hillwood estate, museum and gardens.  FCGC members admired the extensive formal gardens, woodlands, and waterfall.
  • A tour to the U.S. Botanic Garden, where FCGC members took a guided tour of the Conservatory, then had time to check out the outdoor gardens close to the Conservatory.
FCGC members also find inspiration and ideas in public and private gardens that they visit on their own, including:
  • A California vacation offering views of a stunning purple climber in a San Francisco garden, a wall planter at the San Francisco Science Museum, and creative succulent planters in Monterey
